Betty Atine, MSc L&L, MSLL
Founder & Managing Director | Arch'Eng L Design Ltd
Betty Atine, the visionary founder and managing director of Arch'Eng L Design, brings over 20 years of expertise in lighting design and engineering. With a diverse background spanning various sectors, including multidisciplinary consultancies, local authorities, and borough councils, she offers a unique perspective on creating sustainable, human-centric lighting solutions that transform urban environments.
Her expertise covers a wide range of projects, including: Dark Sky compliance, lighting master planning, lighting impact assessments, lighting strategy, lighting policy, road lighting (including Section 38 & 278), subway and tunnel lighting, car park lighting, public spaces, public art and architectural lighting (including listed buildings and wayleave agreement), landscape lighting, and occasionally interior lighting for private residences.
Under Betty's leadership, Arch'Eng L Design blends technical precision with a commitment to environmental responsibility, setting new guidance in the lighting design industry.
Education & Professional Leadership:
Master's Degree in Light and Lighting - The Bartlett, University College London (UCL) (2012)
LET Diploma (2010)
Member of Society of Light and Lighting (MSLL)
Member of the SLL Education and Membership Committee & the CIBSE SLL Technical & Publications Panel Committee
Notable Experience:
Betty has led and contributed to the design of major highway schemes, including the Botley Bypass (ongoing), and urban spaces such as the Leicester Square scheme (2012), Stratford Gyratory (2018), and Strood Town Centre (2016).
Throughout her career with Designs for Lighting Ltd, Betty has contributed to several award- winning projects, including:
South Winchester Park and Ride (2011): Awarded the Environmental Award at the British Parking Awards 2011, this scheme uses an innovative dimming protocol that reduces brightness by 50% when the car park is not fully occupied, while preserving the surrounding dark sky.
Waterloo Town Centre (2011): Recognised by Local Government News for creatively enhancing the public realm with energy-efficient LED RGB technology and minimal installation complexity.
Ready Steady Light (2006): Winner of the Technical Performance Prize for innovative and sustainable lighting design.
In addition to her project work, Betty conducted her MSc Light and Lighting thesis (2012) for Transport for London (TfL) Red Routes. Utilising data provided by the Climate Change Group, Betty analysed the performance and cost-effectiveness of LED streetlighting compared to traditional HID luminaires. Betty developed a robust methodology to analyse key metrics such as LED product data, lighting design calculations, and site locations for light measurements for real-world scenarios. This research addressed both the technological aspects and capital and operational costs and paybacks
Industry Recognition:
Betty consistently demonstrated exceptional expertise in lighting design and engineering. Her innovative approach to lighting solutions has contributed directly to the success of numerous high-profile projects." — Carol O'Gowens, Principal & Founder, Ollume Ltd
